Tyson

Tyson Green

Tyson Green is one of Bungie’s longest-serving staff members with over two decades of experience since working on Myth II. He has worked on a myriad of projects across a variety of genres and is best known for his work on Bungie’s Halo series, working as a mission designer for Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2, the multiplayer design lead for Halo 3's multiplayer, and a designer for Halo: Reach's Firefight mode.

After Bungie gained independence from Microsoft, Green worked as a senior design lead for Destiny and Destiny 2. In 2024, it was announced that he would become Destiny 2's game director after Joe Blackburn's departure.[1][2]

Biography[]

From his "Meet the Team" pages on Bungie.net in 2006[3] and 2011[4]:

In late 1998, Tyson left behind a Myth website and his small hometown to live the fan's dream, working for Bungie in Chicago. Three months later, shell shocked and rapidly approaching illegal immigrant status, he returned to Canada for a few years of more mundane work, education, and website management. In May 2001, he rejoined Bungie just in time for the Halo crunch, and has since settled into his role as a designer on the Halo 2 team. These days, he can be found lurking around the community, if one knows when and where to look. Having achieved infamy as the designer tasked with populating the cavernous Library, he takes the heckling with such humility that hardly anyone will be ready when the brewing psychosis boils over.

Tyson keeps a low profile, keeping an eye on the basics. He is much too polite to talk copious smack, and isn't very good at it anyway. When he isn't grinding rough edges off of some game system, he's usually abusing some other one to produce some surprising, filthy hacks.

Though much of his personal gaming time is spent in RPGs where he can crunch numbers in search of the optimal, he takes a keen delight in the unexpected and dramatic. He is often found or driving a Warthog through a crowded hill or trying to incite a large explosion.

  • Tyson is believed to be the inspiration for the Mendoza/Kappus character model from Halo: Combat Evolved.
  • He has his own easter eggs in Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 where his nickname "Rex" is spelled out in blood (H:CE's "The Maw", H2's "The Great Journey") or rocks/shotgun shells next to an energy sword (H2's and H2A's "Outskirts").
  • In Halo: The Master Chief Collection, finding the Rex on The Maw will unlock the T-Rex achievement, while finding the Rex Sword in Outskirts will unlock the Rex Sword achievement.
