The subject of this article is Bungie Lore; one of the many myths, legends, and easter eggs that have been created by Bungie.


Bungie Day 777

This image was used to celebrate the first Bungie Day when Bungie announced its independence from Microsoft.

Seven (7) is Bungie's favorite number. Since the company was founded in 1991, Bungie has tried to include the number in almost all of its games in some subtle and not-so-subtle ways. Outside of its games, Bungie has also included it in its own lore, iconography, and their community even created a holiday for Bungie called Bungie Day, which takes place on July 7 every year.

The following lists below attempt to list all intentional references in Bungie's games and in its own lore as a company. While the lists try to be extensive, some items may be a result of apophenia (where people can make meaningful connections between unrelated things) rather than something that was done intentionally by Bungie.

7 in Bungie's Lore and History[]

  • Bungie has a 7-step Plan for World Domination. Step 7 is still in progress.
  • The Seventh Column is Bungie's official name of its community.
  • Some of Bungie's older mottos include the phrase "Seven is Darker" from Marathon, Tru7h (first done by Hamish Sinclair, a Marathon fan), Se7en, and "The tru7h, the whole tru7h, and nothing but the tru7h."
  • Bungie Day is always on July 7. This dates back to the year 2000 when Bungie's website had an event listed on their calendar on July 7 called "Bungie Day."[1]
  • Some believe that the first "official" Bungie Day was held on Saturday, July 7, 2007 (07/07/07) due to Bungie announcing their independence.[2] Coincidentally, Saturday is the seventh day of the week on some calendars.
  • Before July 7, 2007, the Bungie Community would wish each other a happy Bungie Day on the seventh day of every month.
  • When Bungie officially separated from Microsoft, the companies official name was "Arete Seven, LLC" (doing business as Bungie, LLC).
  • Bungie's Crest include the number 7 on it.
  • Ling-Ling has seven hairs on its head and Ling-Ling was once interviewed[3] by a man named Don W. Seven.[4]
  • Bungie's Customer Support PO Box number in Chicago was 7877.
  • The seventh column in the Periodic Table of Elements are "Halogens."
  • To unlock Recon Armor in Halo 3, players had to complete seven Vidmaster Challenge Achievements across Halo 3 and Halo 3: ODST, and then log into Bungie.net and hit a button to unlock the armor.[5]
  • For Bungie Day 2012, DeeJ announced that seven people won a Golden Ticket inside swag bags that were sold the previous years. The winners were known as the One of Seven.
  • When the Bungie Store relaunched in September 2018 and Bungie Rewards were introduced, Bungie Reward store items were listed for $777,777 that could be purchased with an exclusive code that would discount the price to something affordable.
  • During Destiny 2's Season of Dawn event, "Empyrean Foundation," players had to donate a currency called Polarized Fractiline to a central obelisk in the Tower that would slowly unlock the Lighthouse on Mercury for Trials of Osiris. The event has seven steps, with the final step asking players to donate 9,777,777,000 Fractiline.[6] Two and half hours later, Bungie tweeted that the goal had been changed to 9,777,777,700 based on player feedback.[7]

The Bungie Aiming Model[]

According to a player named MJ Fame,[8] when they reversed engineered Bungie's aiming model for MaxAim mouse-play, the only number that balanced the entire model's Positive and Inverse Aim-acceleration/Aim-Assist was "117" (Master Chief's designation number from the Halo series), and it needed to be inserted into 7 columns: Acceleration X and Y [Locked], Sensitivity X and Y [Locked], Ratio for Acceleration, Ratio for Sensitivity, and Deadzone Ratio.

They claim that this works for every Halo game from Bungie and 343 Industries, and Destiny 1 and Destiny 2.

7 in Bungie's Games[]

Minotaur: The Labyrinths of Crete[]

  • Up to 7 players on a local-area network can attempt to play against each other.
  • Seven spells can be used to inflict damage on another player visible to the caster. They are listed in order of power; Rune, Tremor, Sheet of Flame, Scorching Wind, Incendiary Cloud, Fireball, Scythe.


Pathways Into Darkness[]

  • At the beginning of the game, you become separated from your seven Special Forces team mates, who all end up getting killed.
  • There are seven possible endings.


Myth Series[]

  • In Myth: The Fallen Lords, Avatara's and Alric's flavor text says, " ... the seventh wave of Thrall stumbled and climbed over the slippery, piled dead and Mazzarin saw The Watcher with them and at last knew the number of his days."
  • The Journal Entry from Level 06: "Force Ten from Stoneheim" is dated November 7.
  • Level 13 of Myth: The Fallen Lords is called "Seven Gates."
  • Baelden and the seventh legion swept up from the south and attacked Shiver's flank in Myth II: Soulblighter.
  • In the eighth mission of Myth II: Soulblighter, "The Great Library," one part of the Journal Entry says, "As soon as Garrick was done, King Alric ordered the Seventh Legion through the World Knot to Scales. They have been instructed to seek out Soulblighter's army and destroy it now, before it grows any larger."
  • In Myth II: Soulblighter, the Heron Guard's flavor text says, "Once every seven years warriors of renown from every corner of the empire gather to compete for the honor of joining the Heron Guard. From that multitude less than six will be chosen..."
  • Common Names of the Heron Guard from Myth II: Soulblighter include: Seven Lizard Tongue, Seven Wind Lizard, Seven Crocodile Rain, Seven Jaguar White Flower, Seven Devil Puma, and Seven Eagle Jaguar Claw.
  • On December 7, 2480 AE of the Great War, the Legion had to fight their way through a civil war between The Watcher and the Deceiver to kill the shade Scaripant, and exit the mountains towards Forest Heart.
  • The Seventh God is an 18-level campaign pack developed by the Creation Games map making group and was included in the Myth II: Worlds.


Marathon Series[]

  • The name "Marathon" has seven unique letters in the name.
  • Bungie released Marathon on December 21, 1994. 7 x 3 = 21
  • In Marathon 2: Durandal and Marathon Infinity, the opening song is written by "Power of Seven."
  • "Power of Seven" also wrote the music for Marathon 2: Durandal.
  • The Marathon 2 title track is exactly 3 minutes and 4 seconds long.
  • The Marathon ship launched in 2472 and arrived in Tau Ceti in 2773. Adding the numbers together totals 301, which, divided by 7 is 43, and 4+3=7.
  • The Marathon Colony ship was the hollowed-out moon Deimos, first discovered in 1877 and first photographed in 1977.
  • Demios is 13 km by 7 km.
  • Pfhor are pronounced as "four" and they have three eyes. 4 + 3 = 7
  • Pfhor Enforcers have 7 eyes - three on each side and one in the center.
  • Simulacrums are composed of 17 different human body types.
  • Battle Group Seven has 7 'corvettes.'
  • There are seven S'pht clans: Lhar, Mnr, Shr, Kah, Nma, Yra, and Kr.
  • Tycho Brahe's uncle says that Tycho should learn Latin against the wishes of his parents at the age of seven.
  • Tycho was born in 1546. Adding them individually totals 16, and 1 + 6 = 7.
  • The Marathon colony ship launched 322 years before the Phore attack. 7 x 46 = 322 and 3 + 2 + 2 = 7
  • The sound volume in all three Marathon games goes up to 7.
  • Robert Blake's terminals have the heading, "acropolis.piltdown//004121.25.1." Adding each number totals 16. 1+6=7
  • In Craig Mullins Compiler concept art, the number seven on one of the walls.
  • The assault rifle holds 52 bullets (5+2=7) and 7 grenades.
  • The Jjaro returned to Earth on November (11) 5, 1996. 11+5=16, 1+6=7 and 1+9+9+6=25, 2+5=7
  • In Marathon 2, it takes 7 energy shots from the Fusion Pistol to defeat a Pfhor Hunter.
  • In Marathon Infinity, there are 210 shots in a Napalm Canister. 210 is divisible by 7.
  • Seven creatures appeared in the marathon Trilogy, "Bob, Compiler, Juggernaut, Fighter, Enforcer, Hunter and Trooper."
  • There are seven audio tracks on the Marathon CD.
  • According to page 3 of Marathon's manual, the colony was established "seven years ago."
  • According to page 4 of Marathon's manual, the Cyborg's father died when he was 7 years old.
  • In the Marathon manual, the Tozt.25 Flame Unit "discharges a stream of fire 20 feet long, continuously for 7 seconds."
  • Page 22 of Marathon's manual lists seven lessons applicable to the game, "Move Fast, Seize the Initiative, Wield Superior Firepower, Dive Into the Melee, Anticipate Enemy Movements, Slaughter the Defenseless, Endure."
  • In the Forge Manual, the maximum number of polygons in a Marathon map is 1024. Adding them up individually totals 7.
  • In the Marathon 2 manual, the description of the WSTE-M5 mentions the Ares Raid, which took place on July (7th month) 14, 2444 (add the numbers up individually and you get 14)
  • There are 77 levels in Marathon and Marathon 2. Marathon has 36 levels and Marathon 2 has 41.
  • In the third level of Marathon, Never Burn Money, the fourth Terminal is scrambled but does mention, "14 seven hundred miles away."
  • In the sixth level of Marathon, Bob-B-Q, there is seven science staff.
  • In the seventh level of Marathon, the song 'Chomber' (Music 01) is in 7/4. that's seven beats to a measure, grouped 4+3.
  • In the seventh level of Marathon, Smells Like Napalm, Tastes Like Chicken!, the second Terminal says, "to meet only once every seven years in southeast France."
  • In the 11th level of Marathon, The Rose, there is seven science staff.
  • In the 13th level of Marathon, Fire! Fire! Fire! Fire! Fire!, Leela says in the second Terminal, "#101111011110111100001# is is a '7'."
  • In the 25th level of Marathon, Welcome to the Revolution..., Leela says in the third Terminal says, "seven is darker."
  • Also in the 25th level, when Durandal tampered with the MADDs, he gives you seven grenades.
  • Marathon 2 begins 17 years after the first game ends.
  • In the first level of Marathon 2, Waterloo Waterpark, the first Terminal is named "<CMND PRAMA &49c2." 7 x 7 = 49
  • In the third level of Marathon 2, Charon Doesn't Make Change, the fourth Terminal contains a "Report from Science Manager 7."
  • In the 11th level of Marathon 2, The Hard Stuff Rules..., the fifth Terminal says, "I miss the Marshes of Mnr and the seven of mine."
  • There are seven floors in the 11th level of Marathon 2.
  • In the 12th level of Marathon 2, Bob's Big Date, the fourth Terminal is entitled, "virtus.incertus<77.7777.777.7".
  • In the 13th level of Marathon 2, Six Thousand Feet Under, Durandal says in the sixth Terminal, "I'd have erased my seven times table to hear what the combat technicians on the Khfiva shouted when they learned I could focus a particle beam at nearly twice their maximum range." and "The Third Battle for Beta Tear must be dropped from the Seven Great Battles which every aspiring Pfhor naval officer must memorize and replaced with The Humbling of Battle Group Seven at Lh'owon."
  • In the 15th level of Marathon 2, Sorry Don't Make It So, Tycho complains about being ordered to "realign microwave dish forty-nine." and "display the x-ray diffraction analysis of sample eta-seven."
  • In the 17th level of Marathon Infinity, Eat the Path, one dark particular room with a large window has several items laid out in the form of a 7.
  • In the Xbox 360 port of Marathon 2: Durandal there were several achievements that referenced seven: SEVEN (given for getting seven fist kills in the game), Bob-B-Q (given for killing 77 BoBs), Pfhor Score and Seven Years Ago, Hats off to 819 (the description is "The secret of 2401 lies within." 2+4+0+1=7, and 7^4=2401. 819 = 7*117, 117 being Master Chief's identification number."
  • The Marathon Trilogy box set lists seven: "Features", seven games/collectibles, lines of System Requirements, icons on the back of the box, lines of text on the front, and there are seven "official" weapons listed in the manual, and seven different numbers listed as "limits" in the Forge manual.


Oni[]

  • Most of the soundtrack is composed by Power of Seven.
  • The digits of the year 2032 add up to 7 in both decimal and binary (11111110000).
  • Konoko's Chrysalis was implanted at age 7.
  • Konoko can wear 7 different outfits in Oni.
  • She wears her battle armor outfit in 7 Chapters, counting Training.
  • This outfit has a stenciled 07 on the back in the intro.
  • A broken mirror means 7 years of bad luck.
  • There are 7 rooms in the training course.
  • Hasegawa's diary is accompanied by 7 images on-screen.
  • There are 7 particle damage types.
  • It takes 14 days to grow an SLD.
  • There are 14 Chapters, not counting Training.
  • In Chapter 12 (a.k.a. level14_Final), the TCTF's Daodan Chrysalis project is labeled Project 14.
  • Konoko can carry a maximum of 7 hypos, 7 ammo clips, and 7 energy cells (if you count the ones in use).
  • Bungie's build of Oni for the Mac has a creation date of 7/7/77.
  • The Oni matrix image has 42 columns and 28 rows, composed of 7 unique statements.


Halo Series[]

  • Master Chief's identification number is "Spartan 117."
  • There are seven Halos in the universe.
  • The monitors of each Halo are named by exponents of 7, such as "343 Guilty Spark" (7^3=343) and "2401 Penitent Tangent" (7^4=2401). With a total of seven halos, other Monitors would be numbered 007, 049 Abject Testament, 16807, 117649 Despondent Pyre, and either 001 or 823543 depending on what 343 Industries decides.
  • The first two digits of the year the Halo series takes place in 2552 when added together equals 7. The same goes for the last two digits of the year.
  • The Halo Array needs to spin at 7 km/s to maintain an acceleration of one g at 5000 km radius.
  • Slip space is in the seventh dimension.


Halo: Combat Evolved[]

  • When Master Chief's shield is down, it takes 14 seconds to fully recharge - seven seconds while the shield flash red, and seven seconds while recharging.
  • At the beginning of the second level, there are seven dead bodies around you (six marines and the lifeboat pilot).
  • On the level "The Silent Cartographer," at Bravo 022's crash site, there is a fully loaded rocket launcher (the first in the game) and 7 spare rockets.
  • At the beginning of "The Silent Cartographer," you storm the beach with seven marines.
  • In the cavern with the bridge in the level "Assault on the Control Room" there are seven dead marines leading to an ammo cache.
  • You need at least seven needles from the Needler to make an explosion.
  • After destroying the fusion core on the Pillar of Autumn, John-117 drives a Warthog through a Class 7 service corridor.
  • The last Longsword on the Pillar of Autumn was in launch bay 7.
  • On the third page of the manual explaining the HUD (pg. 15), a screenshot with an explanation of the scope shows 7 extra bullets in the sniper rifle.
  • The Proto Gravemind has 7 tentacles.
  • There are 7 blast doors leading to the Index in the "Library."
  • Foehammer is instructed to pick up John-117 at external junction 4C. Considering C is the 3rd letter of the alphabet, 4C would be 4 and 3; 4+3=7.
  • In the first cutscene, Cortana is confident that the Autumn will destroy 3 covenant ships, but quickly changes her answer to 4. 3+4=7
  • On the level Keyes, once the Chief gets back into the Gravity Lift bay, there are 7 dead Grunts around.
  • After destroying the fusion core on the Pillar of Autumn, Master Chief drives a Warthog through a Class 7 service corridor.
  • The last Longsword on the Pillar of Autumn was in Launch Bay 7.
  • Cortana's warns the Chief about the gap in the trench starts when he is 700 meters away from Launch Bay 7.
  • On Easy difficulty, it takes exactly 7 shots from a plasma pistol or a plasma rifle to kill a Sangheili.


Halo 2[]

  • The symbol on the Banshees' wings is made up of 7 red blocks.
  • There are 7 Covenant races: Unggoy, Kig-Yar, Yanme'e, Mgalekgolo, Jiralhanae, Sangheili, and San'Shyuum.
  • The phone booths on Terminal are all numbered 7.
  • If you look closely at John-117's helmet, you can see a faint 7 (This is best viewed in the first cutscene on "Metropolis").
  • The Gravemind speaks mostly in heptameter, a poetic style with 7 meters per line.
  • On "Outskirts," in the small dark room where the IWHBYD skull is located, there is a number 7 on the wall.
  • At the end of the final credits, Bungie includes a shout-out to those who they "didn't have room to 7hank."
  • To obtain the IWHBYD skull, one must face 7 waves of Ultra Sangheili, with 7 Sangheili in the 7th wave.
  • In "Outskirts," on your way to the Blind Skull there is a sign bearing the number 7 nailed into the wall.
  • In "Outskirts," there is a total of 7 Warthogs.
  • In the level "Cairo Station," it takes the bomb 7 seconds to explode.
  • At the end of the Halo 2 Campaign Demo, 7 Sangheili are seen dropping in.
  • There are 7 Covenant vehicles: Wraith, Ghost, Spectre, Scarab, Banshee, Phantom and the Shadow.
  • There are 7 drivable vehicles in the game: the Scorpion, Wraith, Spectre, Warthog, Gauss Hog, Ghost, and Banshee.

  • Firing the Plasma Rifle until it overheats will drain 7 power units, assuming it is not burst fire.
  • On Headlong multiplayer map, near the bridge which connects to the Needler Building, there is a piece of paper with the number 7 pinned on the wall.
  • The multiplayer map Terminal has a large 7 on the station building.
  • There is a 7 on the lower part of a Pelican's ramp.
  • You face 7 pairs of Mgalekgolo in the level "Gravemind."
  • In Headlong the number 7 is nailed by the side of the door on the building that has the Energy Sword
  • When the UNSC ship In Amber Clad was in the Battle of Earth numerous units from the 77th Marine Regiments are on board.
  • There are 7 levels of caskets in the Mausoleum of the Arbiter.
  • In the level "The Great Journey" there are 7 large plasma cannons.
  • If you count the total of Phantoms in all of the Human levels such as "Metropolis" and "Outskirts" you will get a total of 7 Phantoms.
  • Firing the Sentinel Beam until it overheats will leave a remaining charge of 77.
  • The broadcasting station for Terminal is Channel 7.
  • It took 7 seconds for the bomb to detonate in the last cutscene on Cairo station.
  • 7 hexagons make up the zoomed targeting reticle of the Covenant Carbine.
  • In the E3 2002 trailer, when John-117 walks into the hanger and launches himself into space (which his BR55 is replaced with the Covenant bomb in the game's cut scene), above the door to the hanger is "A-07."
  • In the Vista version of Halo 2, the Silent But Deadly Achievement requires the player to kill 7 enemies from behind without being spotted.
  • In the level "Outskirts," there is a total of 7 Shadows.
  • On the map Zanzibar, to get the easter egg about finding Ling-Ling's head on July 7 (7/7), you must put the Xbox clock on 7:07
  • On the level "Sacred Icon," a number of shotguns can be found next to dead Marines each holding 7 rounds loaded


Halo 3[]

  • There are 49 achievements in the original game (before the TU2 patch), 49=7*7.
  • There are 7 terminals.
  • The Marathon Man achievement has 7 stars in it.
  • At the end of the final credits, Bungie includes a shout-out to those who they "didn't have room to 7hank."
  • There were 7 Vidmaster achievements that need to be completed in order to receive Recon Armor (4 achievements can be found in Halo 3 while the other 3 are in Halo 3: ODST).
  • In the Sandbox multiplayer map,there is a weapon you can spawn in Forge called the "7-Wood" - a golf club.
  • It takes seven needles from the Needler to super combine.
  • The portal to the Ark has seven arms.
  • The "Believe" marketing campaign featured the marines of the 77th Marine Regiment.
  • On the level "Crow's Nest," on the walkway above the barracks, there is a box with a large red 7 written on it.
  • There are 7 structures coming out of the bottom of Epitaph.
  • Cold Storage is the seventh downloadable map, and was released on Bungie Day (7/7).
  • In the Cold Storage Transmission, the time elapsed since an outside agent accessed the delta site has an approximate seven-year margin of error.
  • The UNSC Forward Unto Dawn has the number 7 on the front of it.
  • “The casing is constructed of an unusual porous metallic compound. Shrapnel from the Spike Grenade reaches a temperature of approximately 270 to 315°C and retains that heat for upwards of seven seconds. By design.” Taken from Bungie.net on Spike Grenades. (315 is 45*7)
  • In the mission "Crow's Nest," a rocket has the number 7 on each side.
  • At the beginning of "Crow's Nest," some of the monitors have "Sector 331" written in a corner. 3+3+1=7.
  • Last Resort is Zanzibar Municipal Turbine 7.
  • The SMG has a scratch in the shape of a 7 (easier to see if weapon is aimed at sky or near a light source).
  • It takes 7 seconds of Hornet Chain Guns to destroy a Warthog.
  • It takes 7 seconds for 343 Guilty Spark to explode after being dealt the fatal shot in the level Halo.
  • It takes 7 seconds from being infected by an Infection Form to turn into a Combat Form.
  • In the level "Cortana," in the beginning of the cutscene where you rescue Cortana, there is 7 seconds of silence before she says "You found me."
  • On the side of the Warthog, below where the driver and passenger get in, just above the side skirts, there are 7 dashes.
  • The Troop Transport Warthog is shown to have a total of 7 seats, whereas in game there are only 5 available slots.
  • In the level "Crow's Nest," when you first take control of John-117, the emergency power generators on the far side of the room, where you need to go to get the Black Eye Skull, have the writing "EPG 2401": 2401 is 74.
  • The generator on the multiplayer map Orbital has the number 2401 on it. 2+4+0+1=7, and 7 to the fourth power, 7*7*7*7=2401.
  • The Magnum has Korean Hangul symbols on the barrel, and the very bottom of the mag. When reflected, it translates to the number 7.
  • In Tsavo Highway, the doors at the start of the level all have the number 7 on them.
  • In the multi-player level Sandtrap, the UNSC frigate, Aegis Fate, has a number 7 surrounded in a star on the side.
  • In the level "The Covenant," there are 7 Sangheili that help you (not including the Arbiter or the other Sangheili in Co-op).
  • In the opening sequence of the level "The Covenant," there are 7 drop ships, 5 Pelicans and 2 Phantoms.
  • There are 7 levels that the Cortana and Gravemind Moments occur.
  • There are 7 usable vehicles on the level "The Ark."
  • "The Ark" is the seventh level of the game if you include "Arrival."
  • There are 7 Jiralhanae Chieftains (both Regular and War) in the level 'The Covenant'.
  • In the multiplayer map Foundry, at the wide end of the map there are 14 full squares in between the walls, 7 on each side.
  • The center screen in the sword room on The Pit features the name Sector 331. 3+3+1=7.
  • It takes 7 seconds for the screens in The Pit Ops Center to scroll through all of the visuals.
  • In the room with the Silent Cartographer, there are 7 trapezoids above the doors.
  • There are seven pieces of grating involved with the missile launcher scenery on High Ground (including the one placed under the aiming machine).
  • On the 'fire point' sign on High Ground there are 7 licks of flame coming from the white triangle.
  • There are 7 lines of text on the screen of the gate switch on High Ground.
  • Deaths that do not require two people have a seven second respawn when no other penalties are active.
  • There are two sevens on the side of Unggoy Minor armor.
  • In the level "The Storm," there are seven plates of metal grinding on the cranes used to board the first Scarab, including the elevators.
  • There are seven pallets on the pathway with the missile pods on the level "The Storm."
  • The are seven pipes you can walk into on the lake bed where you fight your first scarab.
  • There are seven symbols on each end of the handle on the Energy Sword.
  • On the multiplayer map Sandtrap, there are 7 standing angled pillars on the long indoor walkway.
  • The multiplayer map Epitaph has 7 hologram projectors, 6 minor ones and a Guardian Sentinel resembling projector.
  • There are 7 scoped weapons: Battle Rifle, Sniper Rifle, Beam Rifle, Carbine, Rocket Launcher, Fuel Rod Gun, and Spartan Laser.
  • There is the Vidmaster achievement "7 on 7."
  • There are 7 Gravemind moments in the level "Cortana."
  • On the mission "Halo" there are 7 vehicles other than the Warthog: 4 Ghosts, 1 Mongoose and 2 Choppers.
  • There are 7 bellows of smoke on the horizon in "Rat's Nest."
