Pimps at Sea is an April Fools' Day joke that was started on Bungie.net in 2001. The joke has been expanded and added to in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2011 on each April Fool's day, respectively. Pimps at Sea is supposedly a combination of action and real-time strategy and claims to have the most complex economic system ever to appear in a game. The storyline supposedly centers around the player, a combination pimp/pirate. Players can apparently create custom prostitutes from characters of other games, and then put them out on the streets (or canals, as it may be). The joke has had remarkable success, and even now is still frequently referenced in various Bungie Community outlets.
On April 1st, 2007, Bungie announced the Pimps At Sea movie, which was scheduled to release in 2008.
On April 1st, 2011, Bungie announced "PimpsVille," an expansion of the Pimps at Sea theme and a parody of the Facebook game by Zynga "Farmville". In PimpsVille players control their very own slice of the vibrant port city of Los Angeles. Visit friendly neighborhood corners, exchange a variety of classy gifts, and earn the respect of your peers, by friendship or by force, as you climb the social ladder all the way from Perpetrator to Pimp Daddy.
