Microsoft Corporation is an American multinational technology corporation that once owned Bungie.

Background[]

On June 19, 2000, Microsoft announced its acquisition of Bungie,[1] with Halo becoming a launch title for the Xbox. Bungie was renamed from Bungie Products Software Corporation to Bungie Studios.

Under Microsoft, Bungie released Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, and Halo: Reach.

On October 1, 2007[2], Bungie announced their independence from Microsoft to become a privately held limited liability company named Bungie, LLC.[3][4] In their weekly update,[2] Frank O'Connor explained that Bungie had been built to be creative, original, and to pursue ideas. Microsoft agreed and decided it was within both of the companies' interest to separate. Microsoft would retain a minority stake within Bungie and continue to partner with them on publishing and marketing both Halo and future projects, with the Halo intellectual property belonging to Microsoft.

Prior to Sony acquiring Bungie in 2022, Microsoft considered buying back Bungie for Destiny 2 to bolster Xbox Game Pass.[5][6]
